Dal Pitha

Dal Pitha a popular Bihari Cuisine is any time snack loved by all age of groups. It is Dumplings stuffed with spicy grounded chana dal filling. There are different varieties of Pithas. Dal Pitha is prepared using fresh rice flour and spicy masala lentil filling.


For the Outer Cover of Dal Pitha:
½ Cup dry Rice Powder
1 ½ Cup Water
1 tsp Cumin seeds/Jeera
Salt to taste

For the Filling:

½ Cup Chana Dal
3 Green Chillies
2 cloves of Garlic
1 tsp Cumin seeds/Jeera
Coriander Leaves

Salt to taste 



For the Seasoning:
1 tsp vegetable Oil
1 tsp Mustard seeds
A sprig of Curry Leaves


  • In a large bowl soak chana dal in sufficient water for more than 8 hours.
  • In a large thick pan heat water and add salt and cumin seeds soon water starts boiling.
  • Add rice flour to it and mix well till it forms a dough and allow it to cool slightly. Make sure that it doesn’t burn at bottom of pan.
  • Make a smooth dough using hands and cover it with wet cloth till further use.
  • Grind chana dal with green chilies and garlic to a coarse paste. Add cumin seeds, salt and grind till the chana dal are mashed. Then add coriander leaves.
  • Divide the dough into equal sized balls and keep aside.
  • Take one ball and press it between your palms. Now shape it with your fingers to form a small circle.
  • Keep a small lump of the filling inside and close the edges to give it a proper shape. One can make semicircle like this or cover fully into a round dumpling.
  • Steam the dumplings for 15-20 minutes in a steamer or in an idli cooker till all dumplings are properly cooked.
  • Cut the Dal Pitha into desired shapes.
  • For seasoning heat a tablespoon of oil in a pan, when the oil is hot add mustard seeds. When the seeds starts crackle add curry leaves in to it.

Sprinkle the mixture of mustard seeds and curry leaves over the Dal Pitha and Serve with Mint Coriander Chutney.
